Smarter Brains for a Smarter Organization

Speaker: Margie Meacham, Chief Freedom Officer, Learningtogo

In order to build a smarter organization you need to start with smarter brains. The pace of change today demands that your team become nimble, ready to respond to new threats and capitalize on new opportunities with utmost speed and mental agility. However, the human brain evolved over centuries to keep us alive, so it is still responding to our current work environment as though we are hunting for food – and trying to avoid being hunted – on a daily basis. Within this framework we can train the brain to learn new skills, process information in new ways and develop a mindset that is open to new possibilities. We have only recently begun to understand the inner workings of the brain, thanks to neuroscience. Sadly, most of what is written on the subject is either too theoretical to be practical or so over-hyped as to be meaningless.

In this workshop, you will learn how to leverage the survival imperative to boost employee engagement, enhance performance and accelerate learning by speaking to the brain in its own language. You will come away with specific actions you can take right away to make your organization “smarter” – in ways that will get you ready for the challenges ahead. The tools and templates provided in the workshop will give you a head start to mapping out the transformation of your team into a smarter, continuously learning organization, one brain at a time. In this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Evaluate the current mindset within your organization and list key areas of development to sustain future growth and performance.
  • Identify at least two ways to change your current method of delivering training to make it more “brain aware” and effective.
  • Create a road map towards the new reality of a smarter organization using a series of tools and templates provided in the workshop.
Who Should Attend: Everyone attending this conference will benefit from this workshop. If you are a trainer, instructor, facilitator, presenter, coach or mentor, leaders, managers or C-level executive, you should attend this workshop.

Chaos, Siloes and Superheroes - Building The Ultimate Learning Community with Design Thinking and Gamification

Speaker: Darren Louie, SAP

SAP is the 3rd largest software company in the world with over 300,000 customers in 190 countries. In 2014, the company faced rapidly changing markets, increasing customer demands and intensifying competition from smaller and more agile cloud software companies. As a result, they embarked on a difficult journey to redesign its core platform and applications and reinvent itself as a cloud company.

Soon began a turbulent cycle of innovation that would produce in an impressive suite of new products and solutions but at the same time create an unprecedented enterprise learning challenge across the company. The conditions for learning and development were particularly constrained in the professional services organization where SAP consultants typically face long working hours, travel to the customer sites and aggressive utilization targets. To make matters worse, when consultants did have time to learn, they have to navigate through a myriad of often outdated or irrelevant internal intranet pages, document repositories and community sites all managed by different groups within the company.

In the beginning of 2014, a small grass roots initiative was launched to create a harmonized communities of practice around SAP’s new database and application platform – SAP HANA. The goal was to provide a holistic community site to meet all of the information needs for not only consultants, but also developers, support engineers and presales specialist. In 15 months of operation, an ROI study found that this community contributed approximately $10,000,000 in revenue for SAP.

In this presentation, attendees will learn:
  • Design thinking techniques to architect a comprehensive and intuitive community taxonomy and layout to align and meet the learning needs of multiple constituents.
  • Gamification principles to design a “Superhero themed” rewards and recognition program to inspire and incentivize members of the community to contribute and share their knowledge with each other.
  • Simple, scalable and cost effective ways to organize and deliver high value training
  • Using his experiences at SAP as a case study, Darren Louie will explore the challenges a large software company undertakes to transform its workforce in a highly pressurized environment, and share a best practices methodology to design a communities of practice that promotes organization learning and inspires collaboration through a culture of goodwill.
