Keynote Address: The New Medical Device Landscape: Adapt or Fade Away
Speaker: Venkat Rajan, Industry Manager, Medical Devices, Frost & Sullivan
Introduction by: Shana Leonard, Editor-in-Chief, Medical Product Manufacturing News and Qmed.com
Time: 11:00–11:45 A.M. EST / 8:00–8:45 A.M. PST
As part of the Patient Protection and Affordability Care Act (PPACA), a 2.3% excise tax goes into effect January 2013 on the sale of nearly all medical devices not sold directly to consumers. Though there are a number of legislative and other legal measures in play that could remove the provision before it goes into effect, the potential of the tax has been identified as the trigger behind a number of significant organizational changes that have already taken place within many major medical devices companies.

New business models and other healthcare cost-containment pressures beyond the reform bill have forced companies to rethink their long-term strategies and approach to product development. This keynote presentation will examine the potential effect of those changing dynamics, and what it could mean long term for stakeholders across the medical device supply chain.

Session 1: Design Trends in Outsourcing Innovation
Time: 12:00–1:00 P.M. EST / 9:00–10:00 A.M. PST
Moderated by: Heather Thompson, Editor-in-Chief, Medical Device + Diagnostic Industry
Speakers: Jim Mellor, VP, Marketing & Sales at Lake Region Medical and John Carey, Vice President, New Business Development, Foliage

As medical device firms continue to struggle for resources and maintain an innovation pipeline, contract manufacturers are beginning to offer expanded services, including R&D and design. What are the challenges and risks to working with designers and researchers outside of your own company? What are the benefits? Today you’ll get insights on best practices for working with contractors to yield innovative, next-generation medical devices.

Chat Session 1: Advances in Testing
Time: 1:15–1:45 P.M. EST / 10:15–10:45 A.M. PST
Moderated by: Brian Buntz, Managing Editor, Medical Device + Diagnostic Industry
Testing of medical devices has obviously always been important. But owing to an uptick in recalls by FDA, manufacturers are facing unparalleled scrutiny to ensure that their products are safe and effective. In this live, interactive chat session, attendees can discuss the myriad challenges associated with medical device testing. Experts will also be on hand to answer questions and provide additional insight to the conversation.
Session 2: Medical Device Miniaturization: The Quest for the Incredible Shrinking Parts

The rapidly expanding field of minimally invasive surgery has revolutionized patient care, allowing for less trauma, faster recovery times, and shorter hospital stays. But achieving these shrinking parts and feature sizes is no small feat. Specialized equipment and expertise in microfabrication are essential in order to produce miniature, high-quality parts that meet required specifications for these live-saving devices. Join a panel of micromanufacturing experts as they discuss such topics as micromolding and micromachining of medical device parts and features. A live Q&A with the speakers will follow the presentations.

Chat Session 2: New Challenges in Medical Packaging
Time: 3:15–3:45 P.M. EST / 12:15–12:45 P.M. PST
Moderated by: Camilla Andersson, Associate Editor, European Medical Device Technology
Juggling sustainability objectives with safety and efficacy imperatives is one of the many challenges facing medical device manufacturers. Fortunately, suppliers of medical packaging services can help. Join packaging suppliers and OEM peers to discuss these and other medical device packaging topics during a live, interactive chat session.

Session 3: Sourcing Suppliers in China
Time: 4:00–5:00 P.M. EST / 1:00–2:00 P.M. PST
Moderated by: Norbert Sparrow, Editor-in-Chief, China Medical Device Manufacturer
Speakers: John Merritt, Founder of Merritt, Myers Inc., Todd Dickson, Co-founder and President, Lumenous Device Technologies Inc.; Ames Gross, President, Pacific Bridge Medical; Tez Kurwie, International Sales Director, based in Europe, Rosti Group and Karl Stillman, Asia Region Sales Director, based in China, Rosti Group
When it comes to China, misconceptions abound. The days of quality systems in name only, rampant IP theft and a docile low-wage labor force are fading fast and being replaced by an innovation-driven economy with seemingly limitless resources. China has shown tremendous improvement in innovative capacity during the past five years, writes PwC in its Medical Technology Innovation Scorecard, and it is “expected to reach near parity with the developed nations of Europe by 2020.” Join our panel of experts for a roundtable discussion and Q&A on the changing face of China and what it means for medical device OEMs seeking supplier partnerships.
