Overview

Cisco Virtual Forum for Education Leaders

The 2011 Cisco Virtual Forum for Education Leaders was launched globally on March 9, 2011 and was followed by an Asia Pacific live event on July 27, 2011. Both are available on-demand until September 30, 2011. Register now and log in to explore leading-edge strategies and practical solutions for meeting today’s education challenges. Over the next several months we will continue to add additional live events and fresh content, including case studies, demonstrations and videos on-demand.

Seemingly insurmountable challenges abound in education today. However, across the "human network", miracles big and small are emerging. Dedicated and determined educators -- like you -- are working together to continuously strengthen education and help ensure that ALL learners reach their full potential.

They understand that tools and techniques mean little without human ingenuity, resilience, innovative adaptation, collaboration, and creative application. Whether the goal is improving student achievement, attainment, or college and career readiness -- or doing more with less to reach learners within and beyond campus walls -- Cisco is proud to convene this virtual forum to share what is already working and celebrate progress toward bridging the gaps in teaching and learning around the world.

[The Cisco Virtual Forum for Education Leaders] provided great opportunities for networking and wonderful ideas that can be used in my practice and organizations. I learnt a lot about new technologies being offered by CISCO.

FAQ

Answers

Q: What is a virtual forum?

A: Like face-to-face conferences, the main features that draw audiences to events are the educational presentations and booths on the expo floor. Virtual forums offer both from the convenience of your desktop without the inconvenience or cost of travel. Attendance is free. All you need to do is register. Register by clicking here.

Q: Why is Cisco offering a virtual forum?

A: With escalating travel costs and hassles, less company funds for air and hotel expenses, virtual forums offer a convenient way for a worldwide audience to attend conferences to network and learn.

Q: How does a virtual forum work?

A: First you must register (free of charge) and input your user name and password. Then on the live date (March 9, 2011, 8:00 a.m. TO 1:00 p.m. PT) simply log into the forum from the comfort of your home or office. You must have a PC or Mac that's connected to a high-speed internet connection. Once inside the virtual forum doors you'll be able to browse the expo floor, chat with booth staff and other attendees, download whitepapers and other e-literature and attend live Keynote and Breakout presentations via webcast.

Q: What are the registration costs for an attendee?

A: Attendance is absolutely free! Our sponsors pay a fee which covers the costs of the virtual forum.

Q: Are there any downsides of a virtual forum?

A: One major limitation of a virtual forum is the lack of face-to-face meeting opportunities. Yet the convenience and cost effectiveness of attending a virtual event easily outweighs this downside. Plus while inside the virtual forum you can network with other industry colleagues by chatting live via text or using our new video chat and exchanging electronic business cards, which in many instances lead to face-to-face meetings.

Q: How long will the event material be available after the live event?

A: All conference material and expo booths will be remain available for registered attendees at no additional costs for six months following the closing date of the event. This virtual forum is slated to be available on-demand from March 9 – September 9, 2011.

A: Attendance is 100% free! Simply fill out our registration form and you will immediately receive an email confirmation with detailed instructions for attending. As the live date gets closer you'll receive a few reminders. Make sure you have the needed browsers and plugins installed on your computer. See below for details.

Then, on the day of the virtual forum, all you need to do is enter the same user name and password you provided upon initial registration to access the show. It's as easy as that!

Q: Do I need to have any special plugs or software installed on my computer?

On entering the environment, a system check is run which will identify computer requirements that need to be addressed to interact with the online environment. It is recommended to view the environment with the display resolution of 1024 x 768.

Before you access the environment, you should ensure that your browser is configured to stream media. All webcasts require a broadband connection. For webcasts including video, you will need a minimum Internet connection of 450Kbps. INXPO recommends a connection of 750Kbps or higher.

Dr. Jorge Nelson, founding Headmaster, Chadwick International
Incheon, Songdo, South Korea

Seymour Papert, co-founder of MIT’s Artificial Intelligence Lab, co-authored a paper with Gaston Caperton, former president of The College Board, which describes how “…school is a place where students learn largely by working on projects that come from their own interests -- their own visions of a place where they want to be, a thing they want to make or a subject they want to explore. The contribution of technology is that it makes possible projects that are both very difficult and very engaging.” At Chadwick International all students have laptops. Internet bandwidth across the brand new 500,000 sq. ft. purpose built campus is very fast and robust. Teachers are supported with the necessary resources in creating a school program as described above.

Charles M. Kanavel, Director of Technology, Campbell Union High School District
San Jose, CA, USA

This presentation will give participants the opportunity to learn about the integration of technology as an every-day tool into education and curriculum. The Campbell Union High School District (CUHSD) employs technology vertically into its curriculum with the use of collaborative tools; such as hybrid courses taught on Cisco Webex, virtualized desktops that make expensive resources accessible to students anywhere in the world with a web browser and virtualized appliances that help save the district money. CUHSD has found vertical integration strategies to be more effective than treating “technology” as general concept or a single area of professional development. These strategies have also led to a measurable increase in students academic performance, without significant fiscal investment.

4 Year College/University Breakout Session

Session Host:
Greg Mathison, Ph.D., Global Education Solutions Manager, Cisco
Orlando, FL, USA

Dr. Lance Ford, Adjunct Faculty, University of Maine, Farmington
Howe, OK, USA

Teaching remote students does not have to be a one to many, information dissemination scenario. Imperative in a democratic classroom is individual voice as well as individual contribution. Regardless of geographic disparity, each student should relate to others as equal. So, how can a professor teach for a university system and build visual community in multiple classrooms when he is geographically removed by over 1800 miles and a time zone? Blending synchronous and asynchronous tools with a scalable TelePresence suite can provide the opportunity to create a community of learners. Dr. Lance Ford, adjunct faculty for the University of Maine at Farmington will discuss the graduate course he teaches in a blended environment.

Dr. Eberhard Alles, Chancellor, Chemnitz University of Technology
Chemnitz, Germany

Chemnitz University of Technology stands for innovation and high-tech in learning, teaching, research and communication. The strategic implementation of multimedia (Voip, Teleconfer-encing etc.) opens up new dimensions concerning fields of expertise and target groups. In-teractive lecture halls, virtual communication and IT-based social networks are not a vision of tomorrow but concrete reality today for distance learning and global networking. This is the reason why state-of-the-art infrastructure is given the highest priority at Chemnitz University of Technology.

Raymond Smith, Associate Dean, University of South Carolina, Moore School of Business
Columbia, SC, USA

This presentation will describe these solutions, what we have achieved and learned so far and our plans for the future growth of our model and how it will change our school.

Mohammad H. Qayoumi, President, California State University, East Bay
